What Is A Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a specially formulated chemical solution that is applied directly to the skin. The formulation chosen for each patient is dependent upon their skin type, condition and desired result. A chemical peel is used to treat:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the eyes
  • Facial wrinkles as a result of aging and sun exposure
  • Age spots, freckles
  • Scarring from certain types of acne
  • Rough skin texture
  • Melasma

Chemical Peels: What To Expect

Our esthetician will meet with you prior to your treatment to discuss your goals and expected results. She will evaluate your skin to determine that you are a good candidate and that a chemical peel will effectively address your cosmetic concerns.

The first step in a chemical peel is to thoroughly clean the skin. Next, the chemical solution is placed on the areas of the skin to be treated for a specified amount of time. Patients may experience mild stinging or feel as if they have a sunburn. This is typically brief and addressed with cool compresses or an over the counter pain medication if necessary. Post treatment care instructions will be provided to ensure your skin heals well and you have a good result.

Patients can expect redness, peeling and mild swelling of the skin which can be treated with the application of a soothing gel such as petroleum jelly. This will also protect the new skin that is being slowly exposed for up to 14 days following your procedure.
