Stem Cell Enhanced Fat Means Higher Fat Survival Rate In Fat Transfer Procedures

Thomas E. Young, MD, Owner and Medical Director at Young Medical Spa launched the latest technique in Breast Augmentation which utilizes stem cells that are extracted from a patient’s healthy fat and is then added back to their fat to be transferred to the breasts. One of the benefits to this procedure is the removal of unwanted fat in body areas that most women seek to reduce such as, abdomen, hips, thighs and buttocks. “This procedure is a safe and effective way to remove fat where it’s not wanted and contour the body where it is most needed, safely and permanently without the need for invasive surgery,” states Dr. Young. Young Medical Spa is the first facility to offer this procedure in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas. 

Dr. Young has learned this technique by studying with several physicians including Dr. Todd K. Malan of Innovative Cosmetic Surgery Center in Scottsdale, AZ, a pioneer in the further development of this new procedure. Dr. Young is also one of the few physicians in the U.S. trained to perform Stem Cell Enriched Fat Transfer Natural Breast Augmentation.

With the standard fat transfer procedure to the breasts, one of the greatest gains with the procedure has been in the fat survival rate which is between 85% to 90%. With the addition of adult stem cells to enhance the fat transfer adipocyte survival rates have shown to be even higher. In fact, Dr. Malan states that when the fat transfer is concentrated with adult stem cells harvested from the patient’s own fat, and is injected into the fat that is already within the breast, the result can equal a permanent increase of 250cc to 500cc in overall breast size equating to a 1 to 2 cup size increase. Dr. Young states “the addition of the stem cells to the harvested fat helps to increase new blood vessel formation that is needed to feed the fat after transfer and helps to tighten the skin over the breast. This leads to an enhanced survival rate which translates into a better augmentation. It is estimated that by adding stem cells to the fat there is a 10-20% more fat survival rate which translates into a 10-20% volume increase over non-stem cell enriched fat transfer natural breast augmentation procedures.”

Dr. Young will gently remove fat from body areas, such as the abdomen and waist, using standard tumescent liposuction techniques. The fat is then processed in his State-of-the-Art Stem Cell Processing Lab which is the only one of its kind in the region. The lab extracts the regenerative and stem cells from the fat cells. Unlike the majority of other techniques, Dr. Young’s lab counts the number of ADRCs (adult regenerative stem cells), that have been separated which number in the millions.

The stem cell mixture is certified for quantity and that the stem cells are alive and healthy. The stem cell mixture is added back to the remainder of the fat harvested from the patient resulting in a stem cell enriched fat sample and is transferred to syringes which are then injected into the breasts. Dr. Young states “Unlike most physicians who are advertising stem cell breast augmentation or face lifts who are just transferring harvested fat, we are truly using stem cell enriched fat via our stem cell extraction lab to provide actual stem cell enriched fat in our fat transfer procedures.”
