Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation
Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation (LVR®) is typically a one to two hour outpatient surgical procedure designed to restore muscle tone, improve bladder control and enhance sexual function.
The achievement of an orgasm during intercourse requires a complex combination of physical and emotional stimuli. Physical stimulation of the clitoris can lead to an external orgasm whereas stimulation of the G-Spot can lead to the more powerful and gratifying internal orgasm.
Proper nerve function and friction are the most effective stimulation for either location. Generating friction inside the vagina to allow stimulation of the G-Spot requires the use of powerful muscles of the pelvic floor and vaginal walls. When the muscles between the vaginal opening and rectum or the muscles of the vaginal wall are not functioning correctly there is a loss of friction leading to a loss of sensation for both partners and an inability to achieve orgasm. These same muscles are important for preventing leakage of urine when you cough, sneeze, or experience a sudden jarring movement or exercise.
Pregnancy and childbirth is the leading cause of damage to the pelvic muscles needed to support the bladder and assist with creating friction during intercourse. Prolonged pushing during labor, episiotomy, vaginal tears, as well as many other factors can lead to permanent damage of the pelvic floor muscles. Even heavy lifting can lead to damage of these muscles.
Older surgical techniques used to correct urine incontinence or vaginal prolapse focused on repairing the muscles necessary to support the vagina and bladder. These surgeries offered the added benefit of improving friction during intercourse, however required the cutting of the vaginal wall to repair the damaged muscles along with suturing and electro cauterization to stop bleeding. This technique, while effective, often resulted in a very painful and prolonged post -operative recovery often leading to hospitalization.
Additionally, these older techniques increased the risk of nerve damage resulting in a decrease in sensation despite improving friction. The damage to the nerves thus impaired the overall sexual gratification a woman could experience during intercourse.
The Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation procedure was developed in an effort to provide women with the benefits of the classical muscle repair surgeries but without the risks, pain, and prolonged recovery.
In as little as one hour and as an outpatient procedure, the LVR® procedure will effectively enhance vaginal muscle tone, strength and control. It will also effectively decrease the internal and external vaginal diameters as well as build up and strengthen the perineal body (see figure below). This can lead to improved friction for BOTH partners as well as correcting the most common cause of urinary incontinence.
Most patient experience very mild pain or discomfort after the procedure and although we recommend waiting 8 weeks before resuming intercourse, most patient can return to work and normal activities within 72 hours.
The Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation procedure is very effective because it corrects the true problem, damaged muscles, not just patching the muscles with artificial mesh, which only corrects urine leakage but not sexual function.
Recent studies have shown that the Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation procedure is actually safer than bladder mesh procedures, which many doctors use for urinary incontinence.
Dr. Todd Malan is a Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation pioneer having been the first surgeon in Arizona to perform this procedure and contributed to the developed of several technical advances to this procedure, which are used by physicians world wide.
